July 21/09

I got in at around midnight from a meeting regarding our show at Romeo Cafe (630 Danforth – sha). Ethan woke up at 2am….now, Kathleen was nice enough to get up with him – but I had the baby monitor right beside me so while she’s downstairs with him I can hear everything. Needless to say – fun night…..

Just got booked for Club 54 in Burlington on September 18th. That should be fun. The last one I did at that place they had a fundraiser for a guy that killed himself. Their friends were raising money for his 2 kids. I know….sad. And even sadder? 25 people showed up….paying $10 per ticket….so each kid gets $125…..boo-urns. It actually wasn’t a bad show – nothing to write home about but I was actually happy with my shit. I’ve been doing fairly well there lately and getting more comfortable being the last guy up. I still don’t call myself a headliner – because I’m NOT. I have headlined some shows and I’m getting better at it – but I look at the headliners like the Scott Harris’s, Kenny Robinson’s, Debra DiGiovanni’s….and I’m not even in the same league. But that’s what we aim for – and that’s why I’m glad Club 54 is there. It gives me a chance to do 40 minutes and build up my set. Even if I have to do it in front of 25 people mourning.

If anyone likes fried rice but feels like shit after eating chinese food this recipe’s for you:

2 cups long grain rice (i used Uncle Ben’s Converted long grain)
3 beef cubes with 20 oz water – mixed
1/4 cup veg oil (not olive)
1/4 cup soya
1 cup peppers (use a mix – green, red, orange)
and if you want chicken fried rice add a half-cup of cooked chicken

Throw it in the oven for 50 minutes at 350 degrees and voila – you have some awesome rice. It makes enough for about 10 people. If you eat it in one sitting….you’ll never get up again. See? I even took a pic of it cuz I’m that good.

With it is curried chicken (curry powder, chili powder, garlic salt and pepper) and asparagus and carrots wrapped in proscuitto (and yes, that doesn’t look like the correct spelling at all…but I’m too lazy to google)

July 14/09

Ethan turned 17 months yesterday. In celebration and to avoid child services being called on us we went and got him a haircut. How fun is it to watch your kid get his first haircut? NOT FUN. It reminded me of his circumcision….people holding him down, getting approached with scissors (we got him a cost-effective circumcision hence the scissors…) and a whole bunch of good ole fashioned yelling. Screaming. Crying. And that was just me. They should really set up a bar right beside Melonheads so the parents can go there afterwards.

All in all, ….it turned out
great. Ethan has ears – who knew?

For comedy shows – you can catch me

at Hooters tonight in Hamilton. Great place for….comedy….ya, that’s why I go. I drive to Hamilton to tell jokes – absolutely nothing to do with the establishment. Mmmm…boobs.

We (HotelComedy) actually have a room running every Sunday night here in Toronto. The place is called Romeos Cafe and it’s at 630 Danforth Avenue. This is the first time that I’ve had a weekly pro show running every week so it’s actually pretty fun to plan. And no, I’m not on the show every week – I’m just helping running it as it’s part of HotelComedy. Our sole job is to just hire the acts but Andrew Evans and I are actually going to assist with our own promo for the shows as if this is a success in July in August then he’ll extend it to the Fall. Soooooo……might as well try, right? Our numbers weren’t great at the last show but that’s something to work on.

On the show this Sunday is headliner Tim Steeves, middle Allison Dore and host Casey Corbin. If you don’t know who these people are – google them. Awesome show at $10 a head or $13 a torso.

E-mail me if you’re interested in coming to one of the shows. Either that or you can sign up for a website that Ian Atlas runs to gather interest in the Toronto comedy scene. The website is http://www.meetup.com/Toronto-Comedy-Source and this will invite you to some upcoming comedy shows. We had 6 people from this website out at the first one so it’s a good start.
